LETTER TO TRAMWAY BOARD WITHDRAWN.
HEATHCOTE COUNTY COUNCIL WILL ALLOW BUS OBSERVATION TRIPS The Heathcote County Council last evening decided to withdraw a letter which the clerk had sent to the Christchurch Tramway Board on December 29, informing the board that they could not run an observation bus on Wainoni Road as this was a closed road, and legal proceedings were threatened if the practice was not stopped. The board’s letter strongly objected to the terms of the council’s correspondence, pointing out that they had followed in the footsteps of a private owner and had inadvertently omitted to apply to the council for a permit. The chairman (Mr C. Flavell) said it was all right to point out to the hoard that, the road was closed to heavy traffic, but the latter portion of the letter, which had caused the trouble, had not been authorised by the council. In any case he had asked the general manager of the tramways to hold the letter up, and under these circumstances it should not have gone to the chairman of the board. In moving that the letter, should be withdrawn, Mr J. L. Danks said the board had inaugurated the service so that visitors to the city could be shown round the city and suburbs. He did not think the council should stop the bus from going over the road. The board was doing a good service to the council at Cashmere in a thorough, workmanlike manner. The motion that the letter should be withdrawn was seconded by Mr W. Kerr and carried. Mr W. Scarff: I would like my vote recorded against that. I think their letter is just as bad as ours. Mr Danks remarked that it was a drastic thing to have any road closed against heavy traffic.
