100 WORDS A MINUTE EXCEEDED IN TEST.

BEAM RADIO TRIAL WITH AUSTRALIA NOT SO DISCOURAGING. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. ami X.Z. Cable Association. (Received Januarv 15, 2.15 p.m.) LONDON, January 14. The first day of the official test of the beam wireless was not altogether discouraging. It began at ten o’clock, Greenwich time, but for some unknown reason reception was variable. Then a valve bxew out. After this was replaced the results steadily improved, till the middle of the afternoon, when a hundred words a minute were comfortably exceeded, and maintained for a "good spell. Signals from Melbourne were strong and clear. Though it is uncertain whether seven hours , continuous service will be achieved to-day, it can be said that the result was far superior to Canada’s first day. The test experts are puzzled to know vn> night reception in London remains poor. the Australian signals scarcely coming through. It is understood that London's night outward signals were weak at the Australian end. It is suggested that this ma - ‘- ie due to seasonal influence, and perhaps will be entirely different during the summer. Meanwhile indications are that the best seven-hour period will be day-time in London and night-time in Australia. Experiments are still going on for a 24 hours’ service.
