MAORI WAR CANOE CARRIED CHAFF.

FARMERS PRESENT IT TO BLENHEIM PEOPLE. Per Press Association. / BLENHEIM. October 20. An interesting relic of the early days in Pelorus Sound arrived at Blenheim to-day in the shape of a Maori war canoe presented to the Borough of Blenheim by the Rutland family, formerly of Patoa, Pelorous Sound. The canoe was gouged out from a solid 'totara tree .by Hewi Whiro, chief of the Ta it uk u Te IT ora. for Kereopa, chief of the Ruapaki, Nvho left it to his son, Weihana Kereopa in 1860. Kereopa sold it in 1880 to Rutland Brothers and they used it for many years shipping chaff to Kaiuma for Brownlie and Co., and carrying over 50 sacks each trip. The canoe lias been placed in Waterlea Park.
