EXCITING CAMPAIGNS IN N Z. HISTORY. Vila view of the general election to be held on November 4, it is interesting to review the voting- tt in the constituencies during the past twenty or thirt.v N-cars. It is proposed to deal briefly with a few electorates each day. The first article appeared m the “ Star ” last Wednesday. DU NED IN NOUT H On the abolition of the thrce-scatcr constituencies in 1900. Mr A. I*. baiclay (Liberal) was elected for Dunedin North, defeating Mr H. 3>. Bedford (Independent), who bad topped the poll for Dunedin 4 itv in 1900. At the 190 S elections. Air Barclay nv as beaten in the second ballot by Air G v AT. Thomson (Reform), who won by a majority of only six votes. Air Thomson secured the election of 1911 but, in 1914 was beaten by Air A. Walker (Labour). In 1919 Air 'Walker was defeated by Mr E. Kellett (Labour), and on the death of Air Relict t in 4922 Air .T. W. Alt into (Labour) wa.< returned. Air Alunro held the seat, by a narrow margin at the general election of 1922 and this year has as his opponent Alt* 11. L. Tap’.ey (Reform), the present Alayor pF Dunedin. Dunedin South has been consistently Liberal since the electorate came into existence in 1905. At the election in i hat year Ah A. F. Arnold (Liberal), who had previously represented Dunedin Oily, was elected by a substantial majority against Air W. I>. Stewart (Conservative). In 1908 Al r Arunld contested Dunedin Oiiltral and Air I. K. Sidey championed the Liberal cause in Dunedin South. Mr Sidey was elected by a large majority and has bold the seat since then n.|tlmuHl, in mo he was liard-pressod by I- Paul (Labour). This rear -Mr Sidf-v is opposed In Air J. K AimManus (Labour), whom he defeated by a. majority of 1 727 votes in 1922. The indications iwe that Mr Sidev will hold the scat. Millar (Liberal) was elected, until 1914, Chalmers was g Liberal electorate. In 1914 Air J. Al ( .. Dickson (Reform), who had also been a ca.ndicia'r in 19J1 was returned. He hrfs succeeded in 'retaining the seat since then. At the election 'of 1922 A[r Dickson was opposed by Air J* Stephens (Labour), whom he defeated by a majority of 697 votes. This year the Labour candidate is Mr M. ( onnelly, who was president of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants during the railway strike last year, and was afterNvards defeated for that position by Air R. Hampton.
