MR HUGHES' SUGGESTIONS.
Sydney, Thursday, , Mr Hughes has received an acknow edgment of his cable to the Employers' Federation of New Zealand, stating that it has been referred to the Defence Committees throughout the Dominion. In an interview Mr Hughes said: "We are assuming our proposition to be accepted in New Zealand. That will end the trouble here so far as we are concerned." The Wharf Labourers Union, he added had cabled to Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward, asking them to use their influence to get both parties to accept the arbitration proposal. Until replies were received he was not prepared to accept the bald statement that the Conference's proposal had been declined.
Mr Hughes denies that the Conference is holding off a strike till after the election.
The wharf laborers Of Newcastle declined to unload the barque Wanganui,' loaded with New Zealand timber.
The Australian Workers' Union has voted £500 and the Bricklayers' Union £50 to the New Zealand strikers.
