THE SUMMER FLOWER SHOW.
A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION.
The Committee of the annual Flower Show are to be congratulated upon the very gallant fight they put up, against most adverse cumstances, to make the exhibition a success. Not only was the weather yesterday most unpleasant, being boisterous and squally, but on the two previous evenings a circus and a hypnotic entertainment respectively had done their best to secure any stray shillings that there might be in the township.. However, the Show may really be termed very successful. The attendance in the evening was certainly very considerably affected by the untoward circumstances, but in every other respect it was a distinct advance on that of last year The display both in flowers and vegetables was decidedly good, and the judges, Mrs Wedderspoon and Mr Tebbs, of Tauranga, expressed themselves as being agreeably surprised with the number and quality of the exhibits. Fifteen ladies competed in the class for decorated tables, and the award went to Mrs Morton, a decision that was most popular, her design being most artistic. Guessing competitions during the afternoon and evening were responsible for adding considerably to the Committee's funds, whilst the refreshment room, under the supervision of Mrs Bishoprick during the day and Miss Burkitt at night, drove a fairly good trade. At about 9.30 a quantity of vegetables and sundries were auctioned by Mr J. Brown, and realised good prices. Amongst those who worked hard to make the Show a success were Mesdames Bennett Bostock, Bryan, Perrin, Cashmore, Hoyte, Bishoprick, Misses Burkitt, Hobbs, Snodgrass, Benneit, Hoyte,'Harray, McGhie, and Palmer (2), Messrs Bennett, Lemon, Hoyte. Washer, Vercoe, Wilson, and J. Jack. An especial word of praise is due to Mr Bishoprick, the Secretary, who was working, indefatigably from 6 o'clock in. the morning throughout the entire day. Mrs Lemon, who almost invariably undertakes the management of the afternoon tea-room, was unfortunately indisposed and unable to be present.
