Auckland, Thursday. A number of carters, carpenters, painters, bricklayers, and general labourers have returned to work to-day in various parts of Auckland. Representatives of various carting firms stated this morning that several of their regular hands had gone back, and the outlook was reassuring. EXHIBITION WORKERS RESUME. , Auckland, Thursday. .The Exhibition Executive's invitation to former employees to return to work this morning was accepted by about forty men. An additional 30 are also employed on the construction of "Wonderland Park." WATERSIDE LABOR. Auckland, Thursday. The business of the port is proceeding as usual, despite the fact that the bulk of the workers are out on strike. Steamers and other vessels that have been lying idle in the stream are being brought up to the wharves in turn, and the cargoes efficiently handled by Union workers. Carting to and from the front is being carried on without interruption. The Union Company's collier,. Kurow, with 3000 tons of coal is being unloaded this morning. The big steamer Sturmfels, of the German Hansa Company, arrived this morning with 1000 tons of cargo for Auckland. . The Opawa loads butter consignments to-morrow. SHOPKEEPERS ANXIOUS. Some 300 shopkeepers in Auckland have signed a petition to the Prime Minister as follows : i"We, the undersigned shop* keepers arid business people of Auckland, earnestly request you to bring pressure to hour on the Employers' Association at once, and not allow their stubbornness to ruin our trade. Business is paralysed."' THE ARRESTED LEADERS. GUARDED BY ARMED FORCE Wellington, Thursday. The strike leaders in prison are being kept apart from other prisoners. They will be permitted to see vis'tors and transact certain business. As the Supreme Court has just held its quarterly session, if committed v. ithout bail, they will have to remain in gaol till February. Strict precautions are taken for their security. The guard has been doubled. The men carry rifles loaded with ball cartridge and buckshot, and are under orders to use them if necessary.
