SPECIAL CONSTABLES CALLED FOR.

On Friday evening, Constable Stackpoole received a wire from the police authorities to enrol special constables to proceed to Auckland.. He, communicated with' Mr Bennett, President of the Farmers' Union, and a preliminary meeting was held on Saturday, being adjourned until Monday evening.. . j Last night there was a largq attendance of settlers in Messrs Dalgety's store, Mr Bennett pre-j siding. The Chairman read a number of letters and wires,deal' ing with the gravity of the ation, and emhasised the neces : sity of the trouble being dealt with vigorously and promptly. . Mr Wihape asked if the natives would be allowed to assist. The strike affected not only the whites but the Maoris.

The Chairman said he' had wired away to .Auckland on this matter, but had not yet received a reply. He called for volunteers. In response, 31 names were given in, the first man to come forward, MrVoss, being greeted with a round of applause, three cheers being given when the final name was attached.

Dr Young then moved that an executive committee of seven be appointed, four to form a quorum, to handle any contingency that might arise during the progress of the strike.

The' motion was carried, and the following were elected : Messrs, Roberts, Hodge, Palmer, A. Montgomery, R. King, C. Luke, E. Hearne. ,
