SUNNYSIDE ASYLUM
Wellington, Saturday
The report of the Commission on Sunnyside Asylum was presented to-day. The Commissioner thinks the staff inadequate and overworked, therefore the patients cannot receive proper attention, but charges of ill-treat-ment were greatly refuted. The lack of adequate accommodation is accentuated by the increasing number of patients, says the Commissioner,, who, however, was generally impressed with the cleanliness of the building and orderly appearance. He found that patients had abundance of food, well-cooked and nutritious. The annexe on the female side proved a great contrast to the older parts of the hospital, being liofht, cheerful, and well-designed The Commissioner thinks that the cause of complaint arises not from remissness or neglect on the part of the staff, but owing to defects of the hospital itself.
