DISASTROUS FIRE AT OPUNAKE.
IIOTEL AND TEN SHOPS .DESi'UOYEI), Ilawera, Thursday A disastrous fire occurred at Opunakc at midnight, resulting in the destruction of Middleton's Hotel and ten shops. No other particulars are available. The premises destroyed comprised the principal business quarter at Opun.ike, and included. Middleton's Hotel Marshall's oflicc. Loan and Mercantile Co.'s store. Mildenhall's shop (saddlery). KanneH's shop (bookseller). Aitken's shop (blacksmith). Dubley's shop (butcher). Nichol's tea-rooms. Watson's boarding-house, Jackson's ofiice. Holmes and Arthur's store. Heath's furniture warehouse, The fire started about midnight in the laundry part of the hotel. There was practically no water supply, and the llames spread so rapidly that by 2.30 a.m. the greater part, of the town was reduced to ruins. The lire brigade dynamited Ni'/holV tea-rooms, and the gap thus made, and the concrete of Jiurlon's shop arrested the progress of the fire on that side of the street. Particulars of insurances are not yet available.
