TOWN BOARD MEETING

A meeting of the Te Puke Town Board was held last evening, there being present: Messrs T. E. Palmer (Chrirman), T. P. ; |Lemon„ L. Bayliss, R. Tecs, Robt. '""King, J. Brown, and A. Mont-, gomery. The mii\utes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed Th 6 Chairman reported that . the Committee appointed to go into the patter of forming a Fire Brigade was canvassing for members, and would call a meeting of those who intended to join as soon as -matters were in a more advanced stage. The Clerk seated that with regarded 'reserving part of No. 2 Road,next -to. .Mr Kravis 1 , the procedure appeared to be the same as that'for stopping a road, but the .land would need to be first offered to,the adjoining owlner at valuation.' Arrangements could probably be made with Mr Kravis.forhimtotransfer to the Aboard. A letter was read from Mr H. M. StewDrt, on behalf of the Papamoa natives, requesting that the boundaries of the district be altered to count from the Waitoa -Bridge north, across to Maungatawa east — Gilmore's road tfront., The letter pointed out the hardships inflicted on , many-Maoris who were working on the railway who were unable to visit their wives, and were unable to get in their potatoes. It was decided that the Clerk write to'Mr Stewart notifying that the Board had no power to grant the request, and referring him to the police. Mr D. The Chairman said that Mr Bprridge, of Tauranga had offered to present the Board with a num- . ber of palms for planting in i the main street if the Board decided to plant an avenue,—Members expressed their appreciation of the offer,' and it was decided to write and thank Mr Berridge for his kindness; Mr Montgomery moved that Messrs Herries |and Macdonald, M.P.'s, be written to and asked to expedite' the Board obtaining the valuation of the Te Puke Board district.—Mr Tees seconded "the motion, which was carried, and the Clerk was asked to furnish an approximate valuation for

next meeting, Mr King moved that the Public Works Department be asked to remove the high banks at the junction of the main and school roads,'and pointed out that this .spot was a great source of danger to children. It was also decided to forward a protest to the Public Works Department 'againstthe railway line crossing ' the main road at No, 3 road at the junction of these roads,by a laye! crossing. Mr Baylies said he understood that t)te line' was now open for goods 'traffic, but the Northern Shipping.Co. had said that they would hot call at tho Mount, as tha wharf:;was rotten. He pointed out that work was sus« pended at the.wharf at present and things were at a standstill.* (He . moved That the Public . Works' Department be requested , to have .the work of lengthening Jmd strengthening the wharf at •the Mount proceeded with to enable goods to be landed there, .the line now being available for the carriage of goods. Several members spoke upon the necessity for, the additions to the wharf being .proceeded with without delay, in order to allow $oods to be landed for conveyance by rail, and the motion was 'carried unanimously. The meeting then adjourned.
