TE PUKE ROAD BOARD.
The first meeting of the Te Puke Road Board since the recent election was held on Saturday afternoon, there being present Messrs T. P. Lemon, W. A. Bennett, C. Barrow, F. Bostock, and A. F. Pruden.
On the motion of Mr Barrow, seconded by Pruden, Mr T. P. Lemon was appointed Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J; Carruth waited on the Board, and asked for a grant to be spent on a road at the back of his property (off the Harray road). He stated that the road was a public one, having been surveyed by a Government surveyor. The Board resolved to apply to the Government for a grant of £50 for the work.
, The Tauranga Borough Council wrote, asking the Board to support the following resolution, passed at its last meeting :- 44 That as the Hon. the Premier had stated there was a surplus of £700,000 to be transferred to the Public Works Fund, the Hon. Mr Fraser be respectfully reminded of his promise re the railway bridge across the Harbor, and asked that a substantial vote be now made." The Board resolved that the letter be received.
, Mr D. J. McEwen wrote, stating that he was desirous of the road through Mr Fenton's property, Whekutawatawa being opened up. His ■ present road through the swamp was unfit for winter traffic. It would require £10 or £15 to make a goud road. The Board decided that when the applicant fenced off the road they would be prepared to spend money on the same.
Messrs Stewart and Clark notified that the contract on Jocelyn Street had been completed. They stated that the filling took 350 yards more than was originally allowed for, at a cost of £15 Gs 3d, and asked that the Board should make allowance for this. The matter was left in the hands of the Chairman.
Mr Bennett submitted a list of roads that settlers at Papamoa considered Government grants should be asked for. TheywerePapamoa Station to Bell's, £200, giving access to about 10,000 acres of land ; Beach road, £100; from Beach road to Otaimatua Station, £200; Upper Papamoa. road, £55.
The Board decided vto add to the foregoing applications -for grants, the following :-Road to J. Smith's section. £100; Road from Ellis' to Ngawaro. £100; Ngawaro to Te Puke, £300; J. Carruth's road. £50.
Messrs Bennet, Bostock, and Pruden were appointed to sign cheques in place of Messrs McEwen, Douglas and McGhie. Accounts amounting to £105, including a progress payment of £52 16s to Clark and Stewart, £30, thirds on the Bush road, to be forwarded to -the County Council were passed for payment. It was decided to give notice to Messrs Johnston, No. 1 Road, and Kenealy, No. 3 Road, to remove trees from the roadside adjacent to their properties. On the motion of Mr Pruden, it was decided that the Secretary be authorised to obtain a complete set of books, so as to keep soparate road accounts.
A discussion took place on the advisability of purchasing a grader, it being generally considered that the saving it effected would soon wipe out the initial cost. No action, however, was taken, and the meeting adjouvpci
