PATRIOTISM IN AUCKLAND.

The war fever is spreading. Every second man one meets in the street wants to don war paint and go off in hot haste to Egypt. This kind of military ardour is just a trifle too Soudan. (Some of the aspirants for glory or six-by-two would soon want a S(e)oudan chair. — P.D.) -The fire-eaters will probably find quite enough to do at home if the war-clouds on tbe European and Asiatic horizon portend anything. I notice that one patriotic and liberal citizen has offered _£20 towards the war fund, which would about suffice to keep an average warrior in iced drinks and punkahs during a short campaign. What 1 want to see is the proprietors of the Herald and .the Ere ning Sf::r emulating' tlie really patriotic example of the Sydney Morning Herald and the Evening News by donating a £1000 apiece towards the outfit of the New Zealaud Contingent —an example which would doubtless soon fetch the banks, insurance companies, Mr J. C. Firth — who was once seized with the war fever — and many other patriotic and enterprising citizens. I may just mention, in conclusion, that the foolhardy youth who made the above ghastly pun about the sedan (Soudan) chair has been brained with a printer's mallet and concealed among the waste paper in the rubbish box.
