NEVER AGAIN.

(written for the observer.) By Thomas Sharps, Onehunga. Never again ! words of pain — Alas ! for the fond hearts broken, For the quivering sighs anrl tear-dimmed eyes, When the last farewell is spoken ; When the cherished one from our side hath gone, From our gaze the loved face vanished,Tho' vain regret we can't forget, One thought will not be banished-: Never again ! never agaiu ! Love's dirge is breathefloin the sad refrain. Never again ! Oh, how vain Are the young heart's aspirations ; When the real and true are hid from viewBy Hope's bright exhilerations ! When, in life's school, we have learned the rale, How we laugh at youth's delusions, Till, out of scorn, sad thoughts are born, And we sigh for the last illusions : Never again ! never again ! We have quaffed youth's cup and the lees remain. Never again! words of pain, Yet Christian faith can borrow A holy charm, a healing balm, To rob them of their sorrow. For faith and love will point; above To realms where joy is evet- — A blest retreat where fond hearts meet, That death no more can sever : Never again ! never again ! Angels sing the joyous strain.
