AN INGENIOUS CALCULATION.

The Survey .Department in New Plymouth -is probably the largest in the Colony— at all a . events, they have some of the biggest men B( to be found in the Colony. One enterprising "^- member of the staff, who is great on all kinds / .of abstruse calculations, has gone into the total measurement of the Survey officials, and lie finds if they were all laid in a row (feet to feet) along Devon-street, they would cover a dis-,^-tance of 149 feet 6 inches ! Ifc is expected that $£Mith6 Survey Department will give the public ocular *wf' demonstration of this wonderful calculation, and ■on the first fine day they will form the line (lying on their backs) from the Government Buildings to the Criterion Hotel. What a glorious sight it will be for the larrikins !

. — ♦ THE DANCING MANIA AT POKENO. The dancing mania has seized the young lads And lasses of Pokeno, to the horror of Mr M , who- wants the schoolroom, which is being used for Terpsichorean pastimes •to be pluced under the control of trustees. It seems that the girls, when they are supposed to be slumbering peacefully in their virtuous couches, slip through their bedroom windows, and run off to the dances, but one gentleman suggests that Mr H.s proposal will be' an infringement of the privileges of local government, and an invasion of woman's rights. At the meeting held to dißcusss Mr H.s proposals, four lads, no doubt interested persons, endeavoured to turn the -tables on the anti-dancers, but were promptly disqualified, and the latter had it all their •own way. Will there beA&gvolution among the ■women ? » __
