MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE.
Grey-street is getting too warm. It has become tlie dwelling place of boarding-house keepers, ;and the refuge of all sorts and conditions of men — and women. A few months ago a gentleman •came from Sydney with his wife, and they found lodgings in that neighbourhood. The Eusb'and had means, and his wife had some £&0 .:pdd,,as well as jewellery and clothes, but some of *£thevharpies discovered this, and one day when thePhusband returned home, his wife had disappeared, leaving a curt note to the effect that " her body would be found on the rocks." It is fertile opinion of the detectives that this was a mere fj^e, and that the woman has been kidnapped by |^Rse harpies who prey upon weak women, excite jealousy, separate them from their husbands, them of their property, and perhaps degrade jHaem in worse ways. It is a singular fact that Bbc whole police force of Auckland has been BHsarching for the poor woman and failed to find Hler. She has been so concealed by the harpies |Hhat she cannot be traced, but it is probable that Hrhen they have plucked her they will send her Back to her husband.
