THE BATTLE OF THE BELLES.
The cry is still they come ! Another wail from Howick ! A correspondent, who proclaims himself a " geutleman friend," is ready to throw down the gage of battle to all and sundry attesting his willingness to prove that Miss S . and Miss B. B. — the former in a sweet thing in pink, and the latter in a lovely cream and cardinal — were unmistakably the belles of the ball. Of course, the object of a " gentleman friend " — and a — ahem ! — very good-natured friend he is — must be to set Miss J. and Miss B. B. at deadly enmity, and to throw all Howick for six weeks to come into convulsions of rage over this vexta quaestio. Now, as we have no desire to be persecuted for inciting to a breach of the peace, we really must decline in future to publish anything about belles of balls at Panmure or Howick, unless duly certified by the local bullock-puncher,corn-doctor, J.P., and bobby. D'ye inoind that now !
