A STRANGE STORY.

A curious story anent the silver plate of the wrecked steamer Lady Worsley has reached our ears. These valuables, it will bo remembered, were stolen by the natives, and have always been thought to be in the possession of some White Cliff or Mokau rangatira. The story was divulged to us on condition that no names should be mentioned, and* we are consequently compelled to conceal the identity of the principal. In one of the numerous skirmishes that occurred during the Taranaki war, a volunteer in one of the Colonial Defence Forces was wounded. He had to be carried by four comrades a distance of 37 miles, to New Plymouth. During one of the halts the wounded man was placed in a- deserted whare, which he speedily commenced to explore, the result being that he found the silver plate of the recently -wrecked vessel amongst a heap of raupo. Saying nothing to his companions, he concealed his find in his stretcher, and, getting it to the Taranaki metropolis, managed to dispose of it sub rosa to a gentleman residing there, in whose possession it has remained.
