THE OBSERVER CARTOON.

No. 10.— Mr William Swansost, M.H.R.

Our Artist this week has introduced a new and welcome feature in his portraits of Auck. land notabilities by representing Mr Swanson in one of his characteristic attitudes. Those of our readers who have witnessed Mr Swanson' s energy and argumentative force in addressing a public audience, will readily recognise him in the cartoon in one of his most effective postures. He has evidently reached some telling point in his address, and is inviting the attention of his hearers to the conclusiveness of Ms arguments. We utterly repudiate the stiggestion of a mischevious imp at our elbow that our artist had in his mind's eye that memorable scene in the Theatre Eoyal when "Willy " politely invited a " hound " at the back to adjourn outside in order to settle a trifling difference of opinion, and that oiu' friend is making the first motion of divesting Mniself of his coat. We have already published a lengthy biography of Mr Swanson, and it is therefore unnecessary to repeat it here. He is one of Auckland's self-made men, who has forced his way to public prominence and the enjoyment of no small wealth by sheer force of character, industry, frugality, and practical, hard-headed slirewdness. He liafces stains, and calls a spade aspade.J
