MONGONUI.
I have to record the death of one of our oldest identities, Mrs Bruce, a dear, Christian old lady, loved and respected by. all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Much regret is felt throughout the district. Rev. G-. waxed eloquent at the funeral service, but, as I overheard a bystander remark, "he piled the butter on a leetle too thick."
The Northern S.S. Company gave their annual free excursion by the s.s. Wellington to Taimaro this week. The weather being fine, nearly everyone turned out, and the affair was a great success. Captain Farquhar was indefatigable in his efforts to please and amuse his passengers. Everyone put on an air of sociability, and appeared to enjoy the trip, except the gentlemen who went shooting, and after some hours' absence returned with half a rabbit between five of them !
Willie, who is a regular ladies' man, was, as usual, "in it," but did not seem quite so happy as at the Sunday-school picnic. How is this, Willie, and what has been making you so down in tlie mouth lately ? Had those visitors anything to do with it ? I almost forgot to tell you that the Premier •was here a short time ago. It was quite a sight . to sec the army of Grovernment servants turn out — all in their' Sunday "togs." The Premier dined with Mr Wyles, which caused some people's eyes to water, and many a sigh of envy.
