The Montague - Turner Company produced Balfe's fine opera of " The Eose of Castile " on Saturday evening to a capital house, the dress circle being well filled. Miss Annis Montague, as Elvira, the Queen, displayed some fine acting, and was warmly aj)plauded in the solos. She showed a thorough appreciation of the requirements of the character. Mr Charles Turner, as Manuel, the Muleteer, was also received with frequent applause in some of the fine solos with which this charming opera abounds. Mr Early was an excellent Don Pedro, and brought out the salient points of the character of the archconspirator in effective prominence. The character of the Duchess was, to our mind, an exaggerated burlesque. Making the fullest allowance for the silly ambition which the author intended to depict, one can hardly conceive that a Spanish Duchess could be anything else than a. lady. Don Mono was a kind of weak imitation of the Polonius of Shakespeare. The other characters call for no comment. With the exception of the slight drawbacks referred to the opera was thoroughly successful, and was well received' throughout. "II Trovatore" was produced on Monday evening. .
