THE MONTAGUE-TURNER COMPANY.

The "Boyal Middy" was prochicecT on Saturday night for the first time in Auckland at the Theatre Boyal by the Montague-Turner English Opera Company. There was a fairly good house. "The Boyal Middy" is an adoption of the German opera-bouffe "Der See Cadet," which was produced originally at the Globe Theatre London on the 27th March, 1880, with Miss Selina Dolaro in the principal character. The opinion pronounced with regard to the piece inLondon was that the jilot was neither fresh nor interesting, but the music, though not catching, was sweet, and in a few numbers of great merit.. It however only ran for a period of six weeks, though the dresses and scenery were sumptions and every attempt was made to ensure a good run. In Auckland this opera was voted dull, though artistic, and containing many musical passages of considerable beauty. The chief credit is due to - Miss Montague as the French actress, and to Mr Edward Farley, whose Don Januario was an exceedingly clever performance. He was well supported by the gentleman who sustained the part of the nigger Mum bo. Though the opera is suitable for a few night's representation, it is not of that popular nature to render it likely to -have a long run. It was repeated on Monday evening to a crowded house, as well as on Tuesday and Wednesday.
