AUCKLAND, May i. The steamer "Wliialkatanei 'arrived from T'okomjaru Blay this morning after 1 aj stormy Voyage. OS -Ouvier Islaaid on Tuesday a heavy southerly gale' prevailed' andl it was impossible to sea Ibfeyond the vessiel. She wais hefidted seacard. Ota. "Wedbesday at 2 a.m. thie steiering" gear carried away. It waa impossible! to effect repairs. The Whalkataine was steered 'by thfe engines until jury iglear was rigged. Thevlessel rolleld a dleaJ in tlia'trough of the selas. The gale clontinued to r'agei fiercely. When the jury steering gtetti< w!as fixed the captain decided to lie;ad! for Auckland round the- north side ol the Barrier, which partly sheltered. Tlile wind changjed from north to south-east andi great difficulty was experienced! in preventing the Ttessieil getting broadside on ,to the sea. Elighity miles were covered under, temporary repairs and pfort was reached safely.
