In the Houye -of Commons, on the Veto Bill deibinte, 'Mr G. Oiwe's amendment- providing after a- Bill was passed thricie by the House of Commons and rejected by the Lord's it *btei submitted to referendum was negatived iby 280 to 164.
Sir H\ Skimue-1 declared that unless constantly userfi the referendum was no remedy to> a deadlock, and if' constantly used would become intoleralble. Mr Da If our emplmsisled it should only be used on great and rare oefcasions>. Th.6 referendum was more necessary asi tho party scheme w,-is getting mere rigid. Mi" Asquith declared! the amendment more revolutionary than anything subniittfd to tlie House. He depreciated casting upon the people tho burden of deciding Avha-t their representative was sent to d'eaide.
