BAILLIE STREET.

T'ho meeting, of householders at the Baillie-Streefc School was only fairly well attended. His "Worship tho Mayor (Mr 11. Lowe), who presided, said that lie was) sorry to see so few householders? showing 1 a personal interest in the affairs of the school, tot remarked that the outgoing committee had administered thct affairs of tho school so- well that

the householders were evidently satisfied that their prtasfence Was not required.

The minutes of lalst year's meeting were read and confirmed.

ANNUAL RIEIPORIT.

The annual report as follows was read 'by the secretary: —

Ajt.ten3!anlcia—lt is gratifying to note: that the fine average: seem red during the previous year has been maintained. Ailmost 50 pier cent of tho puipils secured Government attendance certificiates, about twothirds of thesa being 1 firsit-classi. Two boys, Arthur Ensoll and Walter llirnie, who attended se.veii years without ejvten missing one half day, have received lettetrs of congratulation from- tho Board of Elduciation.

Staff.—Owing to thei increased attendance a fifth assistant has been added to the school. This position ia now filled by Miss Rhoda. Daldy. Miss Lowe, who ha.s finished her teirm^as pupil teacher 1, ia replaced by Miss Sjykes. Miss L. Wan-all (fourth assistant) msigned, and 1 the committee secured the Etervicieis of Miss P'enzholz.

Inspection.'—Tha report of Inspeatoa- Giierson indicates that tlie teadiing at tlie scihool is pf ai high ordei*, and that the discipline, tone, and manners of tha pupils are excellent.

Examinations.—Your committee recognise thia.t examinations are no criterion of good education, and they are aware that successful results* at examinations are too often the result of dramming 1. They wish, hower, to offer their congratulations to the pupils of the VI Standard who gained oertificfiites of proficiency; also to Arthur Einsoll and Charles (Durham., who passed the recent Junior National Scholarship examination, and to Miervyn Simmonds, Claude S'teveinson, and Joseph Maxwell, who gained free placesi at the High Slahool. They are alto pleased to note the success of old pupils— Mists Wylic, J. Einsoll, and James Montap/iie—>at the High School.

School Garden.—Pupils continue t«o bo interested in their gio.i'dens. More ground is being (brought under cultivation, and increased efforts are being made to giet aIL children interested in this sphere of school life. The committee detains to thank Mrs Clendon, who ha,s « kindly promised sei\-ieral prizes for the best gardens. Musieum—•Additions are still being made, and every possible use beino made of it in illustratiua 1 lessons, etc.

Library.—Puring' the year parents werd called upon to subscribe to the library fund. This they did in a very gteneirous manner, so that an addition of boofcs to the value of £20 was made to the collection.

Cadets.—The oadlets, under the able instruction of Clapt. Hammond, continue to do good work. Tho Citizens' Belt has once again found its way to the sciiool, the winner being Corporal Len. Ryan.

Physical Exercise.—Physical exercisa and deep breathing' in the open air precedle each day's work. The pupils also attend the 'baths during the liet month*. Field Work. —As it is believed lhat. efficient work in physical geo;prraphy and certain sciences can Ik, carried out only when the! children aru brought into contact with the facts they aro investigating', §jcii?ol

I excursions for thei purpose in view have ibeien arranged These have i provided the pupils with mucih interest and profit.

Schools/ Gala..—During last November ai united Schools' Gala was held. Through the generosity of local residents f.nd the indefatigable efforts of the combined committee and teachers the children had a most enjoyable day, tho whole function being an eminent siukxie&s.

Free School Biooiks.—Your committee feels that the regulations r© free schools books should.l to altered, and that while pupils should be called upon to provide certain iboakis, e.g., Graphic Reader's, other books, viz., drawing books and exercise bmoks, which are not now provided should be provided fay the Department. Generally they think the principal* guiding' •hhtei Dbpairtment should te, "Lefc the children supply baulks they may and should take home, but let the Department, supply the 1 (books tlialti pupils should not ■take home!."

Central Oommitteia.—This committee is of the cpinion that thei affairs of the local schools could be administered moi'e economically by a joint committee than Iby tev'eral committees. It thinks, too, that the influence of one such committee would be greater than tha.t. of several smaller ones. Alt the present time, it. may so happen that the action of one committee nullifies! that, of another. We think then in the interests of primary education a.t the Thames thait a joint committee should be formed.

ißHbetrts' Entertainment.—Fronii an entertainment recently given by Mr Rlob-erts the school prize: fund beneifited to tho extent of £22;. We are indebted -to Mr Roberts for hi si generous assistance.

Thanks.—The thanks of the committee are due to Mr H. K. Burl:*. 8.A., and! his staff for the excellent result?) olbttaiined during 1, the year. In mo-vinff the adoption of the report, the Chairman expressed keen satisfacition at tho fact that the school had ii'id such a successful yeai*. The report was adopted. ELESttriO'tf OF COMMITTEE.
