James Dempsey, contractor died here last evening. The Redemptorist Fathers' Mission is being largely attended.
The entries for the Caledonian Society's Sports are not coming in satisfactorily, and there is a probability of the sports being postponed till 29th January.
Cases of shop-lifting are numerous. Mrs Matinsell, a respectable woman was sentenced yesterday on four separate charges, and a young man named John Holly received a sentence of 14 days for each offence.
Professor Kirk will make experiments during his visit to Auckland, which takes place in a few weeks, with a view to discover a remedy for the blight on fruit tress. Government are preparing pamphlets on the planting and preserving of forest trees.
