OUR MINES.

DEEP LEVEL CROSS.

The manager has commenced sinking a wtti^se on the Grosslocje below No. 4 level, within about 2Qft of the seaward slide. Good colors of |gpld are seen when breaking down the reef, which is about 18 inches in thickness. Stoping is proceeding as usual on tha No. % reef at No, § level, from which a good supply of payable crushing dirfc is being obtained. There are now about 35lbs of specimens on hand, the treatment of which will be commenced tomorrow at the Prince Imperial battery. MOAN4TAIRL | Th.c manager reports for the past week as follows :—" : Eedan section, 80ft. level ? We have commenced to rise and slope east and west of slide, interseoted in crosscut, at the, points where we got a little <>old when driving. Colors have been seen here during the week. Heldt's section : Good headway is being made in the crosscut towards the leader on which we sunk our winze below tunnel level, and the loader should be struck shortly. J: G. VITAN." CALEDONIAN, The manager reports as follows :—" The stopes east of the winze are still looking poor; no gold has been seen in eithar of them for the week. The ground is very tight, and the lender small, I thought of keeping this dirt to itself, to see whether there is sufficient gold in it to pay: The stopes west of winae are si ill turning out good crushing f>i»'f, and gold is frequently seen whim taking down the leader ; Gibs of picked »totie came to hand from here

this week. The men in the rise under No. 3 winze are making better progress. A change of country has come into the rise; there is now a nice white sandstone, and not so many mineral veins. None of the quartz has yet been broken down. I hare done nothing towards cleaning out No 3 winze as yet, but intend putting two of the men from the poor stopes to clean it out after the holidays, if there is no improvement in them.—T. B. Hicks." NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL. The intermediate drive on No. 1 reef is in progress as usual, but there is no change to report. The underhand stope from the No. 1 winze has now been extended for a length of 25ft on the hanging wall portion of the reef, but so far there is no improve* ment in the quality of the quariz. In the stopes above No. 3 level the reef looks very well in places, and a few pounds of pioked have .been obtained, from here during the week. The quartz passed through the battery during the week has shaped rather poorly. Work will be suspended on Thursday for the holidays, and will be commencad again on January 4th. MELROSE (KARANGAHAKE). The Adeline reef has been intersected at a surface level in this mine after driving a distance of about 15ft, and in breaking into the reef colors of gold were seen, while excellent dish prospects cap be obtained. The country is of a similar nature to that in the Rose and Adeline claims. It is intended to at once put in a lower level to cut the reef, which can then be readily opened out upon. GOLD RETURNS. Moi.NATA.ißi.—Jones and party, tribu* ters, have crushed 4 loads of quartz for the excellent return of 39ozs 2dwts gold. —Guthrie and party have banked 15ozt 2dwts gold as the result of a crushing.

Ktjbantti Hill.—Gordon and party's crushing produced 13ozs 15dwts gold.
