WELLINGTON.

This day. At Hawera a shocking sudden death, occurred on Saturday under peculiar circumstances. Robert McLeod, aged 16 years, was playing cricket when he was struck on the bead by a ball hit by the batsman. At the time he said he was not hurt. He returned to the shop of Mr Pilcher, jeweller, where he was apprenticed, and took charge of the shop for an hour, performing his ordinary duties, and then went home to bed. He was then taken seriously ill, became unconscious, and died two or three hours afterwards. In accordance with the proposal made last session, Government a*e arranging for the establishment of an Agricultural Department, and the organisation of this branch has been placed in the hands of Mr Walter D. Eeeves, formerly a farmer in Hawke's Bay and South Canterbury districts. Mr peeves, who is said to be quite an expert in agricultural work, has submitted to Government a valuable report on agricultural produpts which were shown at the late exhibitions. Messrs A. W. Brown, S. Brown, J. PransQeld, and T. MpKengie were nominated for the Mayoralty to-day, M- Caselberg has been re-elected Mayor of Magterton without any oppositiou.
