OUR MINES.

* CAMBRIA. A Handsome Return. The regular fortnightly cleaning up and retorting for this company took place today for the magnificent return of 23940zs Hold, which was reduced on melting to 23520zs 15dwts. The specimens wfcich have accumulated since last retorting, amounting to 130011)8, and 321 loads general dirt, were treated for this yield. The specimens were very rich, and produced 18580z3 gold, while the general dirt contributed the remainder — 4360z5. Although considerable speculation had been indulged in as to the probable return, the amount far exceeds expectations, and will enable the directors to declare a handsome dividend as the result of the past fortnight's operations. The manager again broke down the. crossreef in the leading stope on the eastern side of the | break at No. 3 level this morning, with the result that the large haul of 6001 bs of specimens was bagged, while there is a grand show of gold still left. The atone is of excellent quality, and is quite up to the average, while the show of gold now visible is equal to anything yet seen in the mine. The precious metal is showing in the face and back of the stope in various placet for some 10ft. in length; while the mineral characteristics of the reef are of the moat favorable description, the quartz carrying an abundance of stratamata and other excellent minerals. It has been decided by the directors to lease the Herald battery at a monthly rental, and crushing operations will be commenced there shortly. It is intended to still keep the same force going as at present employed at the Golden Crown battery, as well as the company's plant of 20 stampers, but considering the amount of crushing dirt available, and the facilities for its conveyance to the batteries, it is considered that this number of stamps can be kept going if the present staff of men is increased. CALEDONIAN. The crashing of 110 loads of general dirt for this company was completed at the Herald battery yesterday afternoon for the good return of 1620zs lOdwts retorted gold, which was reduced on melting to day to 160ozs 2dwts. About 100 loads of this tonnage, together with 801 bs of picked stone, came to hand from the stopes on the lted Queen leader at No. 3 level, and yielded 1550z3 gold; while the trial parcel of 10 loads from the winze on No. 1 lode below No. 2 level produced 7ozs lOdwts gold., Stoping ib in progress as usual on the Bed Queen leader both east and west of the winze, and strong colors of gold are seen when breaking down the quartz. The manager has had several assays made of quartz from various sections of the mine, with the following result:—Tailings from general dirt from No. 1 reef in the winze, No. 2 level: lOdwts lgr gold, 3dwts silver; tailings from general dirt Red Queen leader, No. 3 level: ldwt 6grs gold, 17dwts silver; tailings from general dirt Red Queen leader, No. 3 level (present crushing)': 2ozs 2dwts llgrs gold, lozs 15dwts 22grs silver; vein 3 or 4 inches in thickness in the foot wall of No. 1 reef in winze: dozs lldwts lgr gold, 2ozs 18dwts 19grs silver ; middle of reef in same winze, representing sft of quartz : 3ozs 15dwts 18grs gold, lozs lOdwts 16grs silver; extreme hangingiDgwall do. : 9dwts 19grs gold, 6dwts 12grs silver. NEW MANUKAU. The leading stope having been carried , along over the drive on the leader at No. 3 level as far as the junction with the crosslode, a second stope has been eom> menced. The .quartz is of a very favorable description, and shows gold pretty freely when broken down. The crushing of a trial parcel will probably be com* menced at the Waiotahi battery tomorrow. THAMES GOLDENgCROWN. Cleaning up for this company took place to day, for the payable return of 84ozs sdwts gold, from about 85 tons of general dirt obtained from all parts of the mine. This is the result of a little over three weeks' run with five bead of stamps at the company's battery, and is very satisfactory. NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL, The usual monthly cleaning up for this company took place this afternoon for the satisfactory return of 2290zs retorted gold, which is the product of 158 loads of general dirt and 601 bs specimens. ORIENTAL lOTUNUI). The trial crushing of 22 tons of general dirt at the Eureka battery was finished to day for the payable return of llozs lldwts geld. The manager has discontinued driving on the hangiogwall of the reef at the low level for the present, and has commenced a crosscut on the footwall portion, whioh is a nice body of stone carrying favorable mineral, and shows good colors of gold when broken down.
