Last night,
It is intended to thoroughly test the guns which have been mounted for the defence of Lyttelton by shot and shell practice, which will take place for the first time to-morrow. Col. Whitmore is corn* ing down from Wellington by to-night's steamer to be present, and Major Bodham is already in Lyttelton. A 12-roomed house belonging to Mr Joseph* Haydon Was destroyed by fire at Prebbleton yesterday afternoon, while the occupier and his family were out for drive. The bouse cost £1000, and was insured for £600 in the South British Company Nothing was sated, and the furniture, valued at £500, was uninsured.
One of the five 25,000 gallon tanks, which have lately been constructed here for fire prevention purposes, was tested last night. The two steam fire-engines throwing together 750 gallons of water per minute, worked for 31 minutes before they drew air. The result is regarded as satisfactory.
