KAUAERANGA RIDING.
A meeting of County ratepayers was held last night in St. George's Schoolroom to urge Government to push ahead the survey for, and construction of the railway from Hikutaia to Te Aroha. Mr Brodie, County Chairman, presided, and said a requisition had been largely signed asking that such meetings should be held throughout the district to urge the making of the railway, a most important work, and one he believed that would bs one of the best paying in the colony,—Mr Greenrille said that Government had already spent £65,000 on the work, and that money should not be allowed to lie useless. Aucklanders seemed disposed to discourage the proposals, but the work if carried out would be of great benefit to the city. The Thames district had contributed largely to the Colonial revenue, and it was not unreasonable to ask for the expenditure necessary for the railway. He moved the following :— " That in the opinion of this meeting the Government should be urged (1) to complete concurrently with the present con* tract, section Kopu to Hikutaia of the Thames Te Aroha railway, the bridges and station buildings on this portion of the line; (2) to issue instructions for the survey, plans, and details to be made and prepared without delay for the remaining section of the line between Hikutaia and Te Aroha, and on their completion to invite tenders for the work ; and this meeting is further of opinion that the magnificent mineral and other resources of the district, and its steady and certain advancement, fully justify the people in asking the Government to complete this important branch line of railway.'' —Mr D. E. O'Sulliran seconded the resolution, and it was unanimously carried.—The following resolution, moved by Mr Wood and seconded by Mr J. J. Foy, was also carried:—" That the Chairman forward a copy of the foregoing resolution to the members for Coromandel and the adjoining districts, soliciting them to jointly interview Government and request that an adequate sum be placed on the estimates for the completion of this longneglected and oft-promised line."—A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting.
