A fever.imporled from New Caledonia has been very prevalent, but not daDgerous to life. Mr Thurston has resumed the position of Administrator, Dr MacGregor becoming acting Colonial Secretary. Trade is very depressed, and a statement made in the Legislative Council shows an expenditure of £7000 over receipts, and no signs of improvement. It has been resolved to bring under the notice of the Colonial Secretary the reduction of the Governor's salary. The prospects of the cane crop are very good; on Rewa it is magnificent, and on some estates it has gone over from three to six tons per acre, although 25cwt. ia the average produce of ether cane-growing countries.
