WELLINGTON.
This day. New Guinea-Major-General Scratchley has had several interviews with the Government respecting contributions by New Zealand towards the cost of a New Guinea' Protectorate. It is understood that his visit is purely in connection with JS"ew Guinea affairs. The Tariff. The Premier has written to the Chairman of the meeting of members which met yesterday to consider the proposed tariff, stating- it is the intention of Government to carefully and thoroughly scrutinize the many suggestions before bringing down the Customs Duties Bill. At a meeting of members held this morning, a resolution was passed placing on record tbe disapproval of any increase in customs duties at the present time.
The St. James' Presbyterian Church at Newton was broken into on Sunday morning, and the contents of the mission box, amounting to about £2, were stolen.
It has been decided to hold a magisterial enquiry into the striking of the lonic tomorrow.
