Saturday. The negotiations between the Govern* ment and the Wellington and Manawatu Bail way Company, for taking over the line now in course of construction, bare, by consent, been broken off. When the negotiations were opened, it was understood that if the shareholders withheld their content, this course would be adopted. Full particulars baring been placed before the London shareholders, who hold about half the capital, they decided not to gire their assent, and resolred to agree to the capital being increased, and also to assist id erery possible way the raising of money to complete the construction of the line. A meeting of shareholders will probably be held on Monday for the purpose of considering questions of security for the new debentures. .

This day. The body of Liardet has been found on the eastern side of Lake Wairarapa. Tbe mails by the Aorangi, 2600, leave Port Chalmers for Lyttelton by the s.s. Penguin/this afternoon, and reach here on Wednesday forenoon. The Aorangi leaves at once for Auckland, which is really her first port, she having called oft" Port Chalmers merely for the purpose of landing the mails.

The Kaikoura arrived at Plymouth in 37 days 9 hours from Lyttelton, and notwithstanding she was three days late in leaving, she delievered her mails a day in advance of lime table date. This is the fastest passage on record.
