Taukanga, This dry,
The popularity of Mr J. SheehaD as a candidate for the representation of this district in the House seemsto be daily growing. A requisition is now being ex: tensively signed in the neighborhood of Eotorua to Mr Wm. Kelly, the other candidate, to, withdraw iron* the contest. Its terms- are as follows :—" In view of the approaching election of a member for the House of Representatives for this district, wo would -■respectfully represept to you 'as one of tho two candidates now in tho field' tho desirability of strungt honing tho' position of out member in tho House- by returning the other candidate, Mr Shaehau, unop. posed. Mr Sheehan's tnlt\nt Rnd long parliamentary experienco places him, we consider, iv tho front rank of JFfew Zealand statesmen, and one whose services as our representative would be likely to prove invaluable to this district, and also to the colony, generally. Further, you are equally with Mr Sheehan a supporter of the present Ministry, while your own views regarding the speedy settlement of the waste-lands of the Colony, whether Crown or Native, have in Mr Sheehan one of the most popular and powerful advocates. Colonial defences, federation, and the grave questions affects ing this and all the colonies, arising from the impending European war, render it especially imperative on this occasion to return the most experienced of bur public men to the General Assembly. For these reasons we feel no diffidence in asking you to sink at this time any simply local or personal considerations, and generously and patriotically retire from the field in favor of Mr Sbeehan." \
