The Reefton County Elections
TWO PETITIONS ADJUDICATED UPON.
(Pee Pbess Association).
Reefton, This day. Two County election petitions, which have been before the Magistrate's Court since January last, were brought to a conclusion on Saturday. In the first, which was a petition against the election of _Mr Patrick Brennan, for Reefton riding, sixty out of seventy votes alleged to have been recorded improperly for him were struck off, and his election declared void, , the .^candidates declared properly elected being Messrs Menteith and Campbell; Costs were given against Brennan at £163 12s. In the second petition against Mr Menteith', 21 votes were challenged, but only 13 declared improperly recorded, and as Menteith's majority stood at 19, the striking off did not affect the election, but made Campbell and Breunan ties. The Magistrate gave his casting vote to the sitting member, and Brennan conse-. quently no longer holds a seat in the Council. Nearly 200 witnesses were examined, and the costs amounted to nearly £1000. Probably an appeal will be ina^e to the Supreme Court.
