The Religious Craze among the Maoris.

Proposed Human Sacrifice.

(Peb Pbess Association.)

Auckland, This day

The strange religious craze is still rampant amongst the Northern natives. The Maori Prophetess at Kawakawa has fixed the millenium. Crowds daily wait on her, and fully credit her prophecies. At Hokianga a Tohunga has arisen who states that Christ's mediation is only for the Pakeba, and unless the Maoris adopt this plan of salvation they will perish. Burnt offerings of dogs, cats, and owls have been made. These, however, are only preliminary and typical of a grand sacrifice, which is to take place within a few days, on an altar now being constructed according to the design adopted in the time of Moses. The victim appointed is a well featured girl, the daughter of the High Priest himself, who is a consenting party, she having expressed her willingness to die for the benefit of her race and people. The police have visited the settlement, and their report confirms the statements made regarding the extent of hallucination. Steps will be taken to prevent the proposed homicide.
