AUCKLAND.

This day.

The projected visit of the Governor to Auckland on his return from Sydney, is construed as an intention on the part of the Ministry to commence defence works at once.

Mr W. L. Eees writes to the Herald a long letter on the question of land, labor, and capital. He proposes to lecture on the subject, and imagines his plan much better tban those of Matthews, George, and other reformers. He sets himself to formulate a plan by which the industrial clasees shall share with the land holders and capitalists the wealth from land and nature, which, with the aid of capita^ they create.

The concert in tbe Lome Street Hall last night, under the auspices of the Catholic clergy, was a great success. Bishop 3 Luck, Moran, and Bed wood were present.

The Eight Hours' Demonstration yesterday was a success. Many men were working, and tbe interest in the movement was therefore somewhat less.

The Deep Level Cross expects that in a few days all the contributors to the pumping will have signed, and other works will be then energetically pushed on.
