Extraordinary Religious Craze Among the Maoris.

Auckland, This day. A religious craze has broken out amongst the natives of the North. A prophetess of the name of Maria, daughter of Oporo Pungara, has enticed about 300 Hokianga natives to believe in her divine powers. Her theory is that the millenium is at hand, that on the ranges of Hokianga crowds of the defeated Maoris will immediately assemble, and that a great river will then suddenly appear from Heaven and wash all the spirits of the departed there congregated, and all will become white as the pakeha and reign with Christ a thousand years. Many of her followers, fully trusting to this immediate advent, have sold, and are selling off, their houses, cattle, and even their crops for any sum they can obtain. Europeans take advantage of this religious frenzy, and a great many sales of land have now taken place. It is reported that the prophetess daily sacrifices dogs, cats, anS some say even children, to the Deity.
