Telegrams are to hand from Lord Wolseley stating that the Mahdi has captured Khartoum through the treachery of some of Gordon's followers, and that Gordon is probably a*'prisoner. *

Later.

Further intelligence has been received showing that Khartoum fell on the 26th of January.

Sir Charles Wilson, with a detachment of the Royal Sussex Regiment, arrived at Khartoum, by steamer from Metemneh, on the 28th, and found the city occupied by the enemy, and he forthwith returned, but under a heavy fire from the river banks. The steamer was afterwards wrecked below the Shehukli cataract, but all on board were saved, and landed at an island, from which a steamer has been sent to the rescue.

The fate of Gordon is as yet uncertain.
