The rain throughout the country has been the heaviest experienced^ for years, and haa fallen over ,the whole colony and this city.
- The rain here to day spoiled the holiday sports.
The cricket match between the English team and an eleven of New South Wales, took place here to-day. The 6rst innings of the home team closed for 60 runs. They therefore followed on, and when the stumps were drawn for the day they had lost one wicket for 42 runs. The wicket was heavy owing to the recent rains. The visitors'bowling was dead on. The following are the names of the home team: —C.Baunerman.Downes, Evans, Garrett, Jones,,. Hiddlestone,-Jones, Marr, Uunn, Ohanton, Pope, Tower.
Hobaet, Yesterday. Arrived, this morning : The New Zealand Shipping Company's Eoyal mail steamer Aorangi, from Plymouth, Dec. 20th. She encountered a beav.y gale between Plymouth and Teneriffe. The passengers for New Zealand number 233.
