A project is on foot in Italy just now for throwing a bridge over the Straits of Messina, separating Sicily from Italy I The narrowest portion of the Straits is two miles across, but the depth of water ■*e-re is Z°*Z K~»V extending ia some places to 521 ft. Between Cap del Tezzo and Ganzirri the channel is half a mile wider, but the depth of water is only dblrt., and the currents are much less dangerous. Here, then, the engineer has proposed to construct his bridge. The plans present two land towers and three piers, each 1090ydsapart. The foundations ot three piers ate to be constructed of granite ballast up to within 75£ ft. abore the surface of the water. The" termination of the bridge will be tower-abiped piers of granite. These piers will support a viaduct constructed entirely of steel and raiaed to a height of 328 ft. above the water; and, in addition to a double line of rails, it is proposed to make the.bridge wide enough to include s road for ordinary carriage traffic.—lnfention. *
