DEAR BREAD AND THE BAKERS.
(To the Edior of the EVBNING StAK) Sir,—Several letters hare appeared in onr journals lately upon the bakers and the exorbitant price of bread at the Thames as compared with the low price of flour, and the price at which this indispensible article is being supplied by bakers in Auckland/or cash, viz.: at a trifle over a penny a pound. Can it be any wonder, then, that people are becoming alive to the absurdity, if not iniquity, of such a charge as 2d per pound here? I think not. But what is the use of writing to expose the absurdity, if not iniquity, of the thing, if the community as a whole are not prepared to bring the question to a prao tical issue. The bakers care bnt little whose child cries so long as theirs laughs. The only way to permanently overcome the monopoly is by the formation of a Co-operative Flour, Bread, 5 Bis. cuit, and Small Goods Association ; shares—five shillings each. Thns the whole community, more'or T ss, might do their part to break up a thing that presses heavily on poor but honest families, who pay for the bread they eat. Now in order to test the people, whether or not they are prepared, practically, to break up the bakers monopoly by taking the thing into their own hands, intimations to this effect, enclosed in an envelope, and addressed "Dough Boy," will be received at the Star Ofeice until February 4th. If it should be found that a sufficient number of reliable persons are willing to take the lead in the formation of a cooperative association for so good and desirable a purpose, a meeting of such will be called for the discussion of the whole subject, and for taking active steps for the" promotion of the object. At any rate.jthe ventilation of the subject can do no harm anyway, but is sure to do good—iSm, &c,;. '" : ' •■.-■. v•.;,;•-..■

N.B.—For obvious reasons the strictist secrecy will be maintained untilafter the preliminary meeting. - ; ■;.
