This day.

The Hon. J. Ballance was entertained at a banquet yesterday. In the course of his speech he justified the action of the Government in regard to tbeir annexation policy, and spoke hopefully of the success of his native administration. He also expresses a determination to push on the settlement of land by small farmers, and urged moderation in expenditure in con. nection with the defences of the colony.
