THE LONDON METROPOLITAN POLICE.
The annual report for 1883 of Colonel Henderson, Commissioner of the Police for the Metropolis, states that the author* ised strength of the force on December 31 last was 25 superintendents. 611 inspectors, 1036 sergeants, and 10,950 constables. During the year 21,110 houses were built forming36l new streets and onenew square, covering a distance of 56 miles and 84 yards. Assaults on the police numbered 2776. There were 79,373 offences for which arrests were naade. There was an increase of drunk and disorderly persons, and a slight increase of cases of mere drunkeaness. It is, however, sfattd that 4he police do not now arrest tor mere drunkenness. There was a eonsiderab'a decrease in the number of felonies including burgularies. Directions hare been given to issue revolvers to such of the police employed on night duty in th» exterior districts as are desirous of liavin? tb*m, and they ha?e been instructed in their use-
