WELLINGTON

This day, Police Re-instatements.

The Government has decided to reinstate three inspectors and three subinspectors—who were by the late Government, owing to its retrenchment scheme, reduced to the rank of Sergt.-Major—to their former positions as third class inspectors. They will continue at the same scale of pay for the present, but next session an increase will be considered, and provision made on the Estimates. The New Settlement Scheme. The Surveyor-General will shortly visit and report upon all Crown lands as to their suitability for the purpose of Asso"ciation settlements. The probable price of the land under the scheme will not exceed one pound per acre, inclusive of cost of survey. The new series of Civil Service regula tions, intended to enforce more punctual and regular attendance during office hours, hare been prepared, and will shortly be issued. Federal Sill Alterations. Government has received a cable from the Agent-General giving the proposed alterations in the Federation Enabling Bill which were generally unimportant, the most important being, that power is given to the Legislature of any colony to withdraw from the operations of the Bill. The Times Libel Action. Messrs Buckley, Stafford, and Fitzherbert will act as solicitors for Sir Julius Vogel in his libel action against the Times, and the Attorney-General has also been retained. The rumors that Government intended removing the Inspectors of Police are without foundation, Government having no changes in contemplation. The Trunk Railway. Mr Rochfort, who is in charge of the surveys of the North Island Main Trunk Railway, hopes to have the fifteen miles southward from Te Awamutu completed by the middle of January. The necessary plans will be finished a month later, when | tenders will be called.
