ATHLETIC SPOUTS DEMONSTRATION.
After our report closed yesterday the programme of the United Athletic Com* mittae was concluded in the Parawai Gardens. In last issue we gave an account of the events up to the cricket and footballers Handicap of 300 yards. The others were as follows :— Vaulting with the Pole ; ]st prize, 30s ; 2nd prize, 10s. There were six entries, but the competition eventually resolved itself into a struggle for supremacy between Arae and Waka, being won by the former, who cleared Bft. 4in. Demonstration Handicap (final heat, •§■ mile.) The starters for this were Tregonning. scratch; Herbert, 15yds; A. Thomas, 20yds; and W. Dunn, 25yds. Herbert, P 1 Thomas, A. ... ... 2 Dunn, W 3 This was a good race. Dunn kept his start for some time, but Thomas gradually drew upon him, TregonniDg running very strongly in the rear, about 10 yards behind Horbert, This order was maintained for nearly the whole of the first round. When about half the distance had been covered Tregonning tripped and fell over a dog which ran across the track and this threw him out of any chance of winning the race. On the side of the course opposite the winning post Herbert, well judging his time, put on a spurt, and
went up to Dunn and Thomas, and a close run in between the three followed, resulting in Herbert winning by about three feet from Thomas, with Dunn close up. This made the points in the Handicap score :— P. Herbert 18 A. Thomas 13 W. Dunn 8 J. Paterson ... ... 4 F. Hall ".', 2
A meeting of the Committee will be held this evening, when the protest lodged by W. Dunn in connection with the 150 yards event will be dealt with. Should this be in favor of the protest (as regards first place) the points of the first three men will be 13 each for Herbert, Thomas, and Dunn, but in the case of the Committee over-ruling the decision of their appointed judge, and allowing that the race resulted in a dead heat, the list will show Herbert 13£, Thomas 13, and Dunn BJ. A Boys' Bace, \ mile, was next run. and was won by H. Steedman, with Kopa second, and Sherlock third. The Mile Handicap, Ist prize £5, 2nd £1, 3rd 10s, Produced as starters: Richardson, scratch ; A. McNeil, A. Thorburn, and J. Steedman, 15 yards; C. Kirby and T. Johnston, 25 yards; H. Steedman, 30 yards ; J. Ingles, 40 yards; E. Meredith and T. Mclntyre, 45yds; and Irwin, 50yds. Mcintyre went away with a strong lead, and maintained it for more than half the distance, when McNeil and Steedman overhauled him, Steedman immediately afterwards going to the front and winning the race easily. The result was :—
Steedman ... ... 1 McNeil 2 Thorburn 3 Consolation Handicap, 200 yards, Ist prize £2, 2nd £1. For this the starters were : W. Dunn, and T. Godkin, scratch; H. Torrens, 4 yards ;J. McGregor, 5 yards; F. Hall, 6 yards; Murray, 8 yards ; and Hennessy, 10 yards. A good finish resulted in :— J. McGregor ... ... 1 H. Torrens ... ... 2 F. Hall 3 This concluded a very successful meeting, and we hope that the Committee will be encouraged to make their meetings periodical.
