The following are the battery returns at Keefton for the week ending Saturday, Ist inst.:—Keep-it-Dark, 4200zs amalgam ; Fiery Cross, 2170zs amalgam; Phoonix, 1750zs amalgam.
A Mokihinuicorrcspondent writes under date 24th October:—We are fast ap» proaching the realisation of our patient hopes in the shape of a handsome crushing of Red Queen stone in the Mokihinui Company's battery. The berdans and all gear were safely crossed to the north bank of the river yesterday evening, and will be shortly placed in position. We expect everything to be in full swing early next month, and as there is a large quantity of splendid looking stone to grass, we may look forward to a very decent return ere the coming 'Xmas. The JKed Queen paddocks are quite filled with stone, which, according to appearance, will shortly speak for itself.
The Cunard Company are determined not to lose the carriage of the American, Australian, and N.Zj. rqails. On SaturdaySeptember 20, they launched a new steel liner of 8,000 tons and 13,000 horse-power, whioh will cross the Atlantic within six days. The vessel was christened the " Jtftruria " by the Duchess of Manchester.
The final contract for cutting the last sec ♦ ion of 30,000,000 cubic metres of the Panama Canal has been signed between the Canal Company and the New York Dredging Company, a firm of American contractors, the price being If. 45c. per m£ttre. The work will be finished by 1887. Indeed, it is announced that M. deLesaeps will propeed to Panama early next year to attend the opening of the first section of the
