London, November 11
The wool sales opened to-day. There was a good attendance of both Home and Foreign buyers. The opening catalogue comprised 6900 bales, and good competition was experienced, and closing prices at last sales firmly maintained. The auctions close on the 29th inst. Paeis, November 11. The Cholera-Ninety-eight deaths from cholera occurred here yesterday.
London, November 10. The homeward mails, per Orient steamship Liguria, were delivered via Brindisi to-day, from Melbourne October 3.
Arrived : The ship Dunedin, from Oamaru on August 10th.
Mr Gladstone was not present at the Guildhall banquet this evening. Earl Granville, who was among the guests of the evening, made a lengthy speech, in which he expressed a hope that Lord Wolseley, besides rescuing General Gordon, would leave a stable Government n the Soudan. The Foreigu Secretary also stated (hat the Cabinet had not yet examined Lird Northbrook's report on the state of affiirs in Egypt. Both the French and Chinese Governments were aware of England's readiness to mediate between them for the settlement of the Tonqain difficulty and strained relations which had arisen from the Langson affair. Referring to the Franchise Bill, Lord Granville declared that if the Conser vatives formulated a definite scheme for the redistribution of seats, the Government would be prepared to modify theirs accordingly. November 11. The persistent rumours regarding the parleying which is alleged to be now proceeding between France and China are daily gaining credence, and it is now further stated that the French Government will forego its demand of indemnity on account of the Langson affair in order that a pacific settlement of the Tonquin difficulty may be arrived at.
