DUNEDIN.

This day

At the annual meeting of the Otago Institute, Mr Petrie (President) delivered an address on " Some scientific duties of the Government of New Zealand." He referred to the reckless destruction of New Zealand forests, and pointed out the necessity of Government taking steps to conserve them, and also of planting young trees. He urged that oue of the scientific duties which Government ought to discharge was to establish science and technical schools ; another duty was the establishment of model farms, where young men might be instructed in the propagation and culture of tobacco, oranges, bananas, sugar, and other products of tropical climates. Government should get native flora and fauna properly classified, and he thought that no abler men could be found to undertake this task than Mr Hooker, of the Kew Gardens, England; Mr Kirk, of Lincoln College, Christchurch ; and Mr Cheeseman, of the Auckland Museum. They were cmi nently fitted to fulfil the position of colo> nial collaborateurs in such au undertaking.

The Anglican Synod has closed. Bishop Neville intimated that he would shortly visit England for the purpose of completing arrangements for the theological college. Arrived : Ruapehu.
